Ueli Steck honoured with Karl Unterkircher Award 2010 |

Extreme alpinist Karl Unterkircher was killed on July 15, 2008 during his expedition on Nanga Parbat. Friends, colleagues and relatives decided, to set up a price in honour of Karl Unterkircher. The "Karl Unterkircher Award" has been given away for the first time during a public event on Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10, 2010 in Gröden / South Tirol (Italy).
Ueli Steck was honoured with the Karl Unterkircher Award for his extraordinary polyvalent alpinistic performances during 2009 for: Speed ascent of Matterhorn Northface in 1 hour and 56 min. on January 13, Golden Gate route (8a) on El Capitan in May, Ascent of Gasherbrum II on July 9 such as ascent on Makalu (8463) on September 24.
Nominated for their extraordinary performances in 2009 were also: Denis Urubko und Simone Moro (Kazachistan and Italy) for their first winter ascent of Makalu (8463) from February 7 until February 9. Simon Anthamatten, Samuel Anthamatten udnd Michael Lerjen (Switzerland) for their opening of a new and direct route in the alpine style of the south-east face of Jasemba (7350m) from Oct. 27 until Oct. 29. Marko Prezelj, Rok Blagus und Luka Lindic (Slowenia) for three new first ascents: Bhagirathi IV (6194m) west face and north ridge on Sept. 15. (1000m, D+), Baghirati III (6454m) south-west-face on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 (1300m, 6b, M5 und WI5, ED), Baghirati II (6412m) south-southwestface from Sept. 29 until Oct. 1 (1300m, 6b+, M8 und WI6+, ED+/ABO-). Robert Jasper and Roger Schaeli (Germany and Switzerland) for their first free ascent of the Japanese- Direttissima on the Eiger Northface from August 28 until August 31 (8a).
