I made a trip through the ice fall to Camp II to scout conditions and further acclimatize, and Freddie teamed up with Sam Elias and the Nat Geo crew for some fun climbing on the wild ice formations on the Khumbu Glacier. Now, with high-pressure forecast to begin pushing in tomorrow, we are ready to get down to our first real mission of the trip: the North Face of Cholatse, via it's straightest line.
It was good for me to see the moutain. The Everest remains very special. The whole moutain is fully equipped. There are many people and a lot of infrastructure. On this mountain there is no chance to do an ascent in the alpine style. The fact that on the north ridge and southeast ridge there are fix rope routes doesn’t allow it. The descent on these routes are all belayed. There is always the chance to descend on easy routes on ropes. Nevertheless it remains the highest mountain in the world and the air up there is the thinnest. Mistakes can lead to a tragedy. You cannot turn back time. Today you have weather forecasts, fix ropes and fix camps. The Everest is accessible for many people. Each of them has its own goal. And each one has its own Everest.
Freddie and I leave the Everest for the moment to his own destiny.
